sneck

A glossary of provincial and local words used in England by Francis Grose

sneck the door, latch the door. The sneck or snecket of the door is, according to Skinner, the string which draws up the latch, to open the door ; perhaps from the Dutch word SNAPPEN, to snatch ; because, when the door is to be opened, it is generally done with a snatch or jerk. N.
