deadening

Dictionary of American Words And Phrases by John Russell Bartlett.

In newly settled parts of the West, where it is designed to make a "clearing," some of the trees are cut down; the others are girdled, or deadened, as they say. If the majority of trees are thus girdled, the field is called a deadening, otherwise it is a clearing.--Carlton, The New Purchase, Vol I. p.240.
