grand

Dictionary of American Words And Phrases by John Russell Bartlett.

Very good; excellent; pleasant. This is one of the words so much abused among us by its too frequent use and application in senses differing from its proper one. Ex. 'This is a grand day;' 'the sleighing is grand;' 'what a grand time we had at the ball;' 'grand weather,' &c. Mr. Hamilton in his remarks on the Yorkshire dialect, in England (Nugæ Literariæ, p. 318), notices this word as common there in the same sense.
