1896. Baldwin Spencer, `Horne Expedition in CentralAustralia,' Narrative, p. 49:

«We had now amongst these sandhills come into the region of the`Desert Oak' ( Casuarina Decaisneana). Some of the treesreach a height of forty or fifty feet, and growing eithersingly or in clumps form a striking feature amongst the thinsparse scrub. . . . The younger ones resemble nothing so muchas large funeral plumes. Their outlines seen under a blazingsun are indistinct, and they give to the whole scene a curiouseffect of being `out of focus.'»
