«Instead of damper we occasionally made what is coloniallyknown as `devils on the coals.' . . . They are convenient whenthere is not time to make damper, as only a minute or so isrequired to bake them. They are made about the size of acaptain's biscuit, and as thin as possible, thrown on theembers and turned quickly with the hand.»
