scientific name of a genusof birds peculiar to Australia and New Guinea. The typicalspecies has a knob on the bill, and the head and neck destituteof feathers. From Grk. tropis, the keel of a ship,and rhunchos, «beak.» They are called Friar Birds (q.v.), and the generic name of Tropidorhynchus has beenreplaced by Philemon (q.v.).
