BORBETOMAGUS( Worms), the chief town of the Vangiones, who were on the left bank of the Rhine south of Mainz. The position of Wormson the road between Mainzand Strassburgidentifies it with the Borbetomagus of the Itineraries. The town was also designated, like most of the capital towns in Gallia, by the name of the people, as we see in the enumeration of Ammianus (16.2): Argentoratum .... Nemetas, et Vangionas et Moguntiacum civitates barbaros possidentes. The name Wormatia, which was in use in the middle ages, according to D'Anville, is evidently a corruption of Borbetomagus.
