CREMASTE(Κρεμαστή), a place mentioned by Xenophon (Xen. Hell. 4.8.37). He speaks of the plain near Cremaste, where there are the gold mines of the Abydeni.If Cremaste was a village, it was probably on a hill above the plain. As Strabo speaks of gold mines at Astyra [ASTYRA], it has been conjectured that Astyra and Cremaste are either the same place, or two adjacent places. Gold mines belonging to Lampsacus are mentioned by Pliny (Plin. Nat. 37.11) and by Polyaenus (Polyaen. 2.1.26); and they may be the same as those of Cremaste, if we suppose Cremaste to be between Abydus and Lampsacus.
