CUTATISIUM(Κουτατίσιον, Procop. B. G. 4.13, 14), a small town in Colchis, on the river Phasis, now Kchitaisor Kutais. It was identified with the mythical Cytae or Cytaea, said to have been the birthplace of Medea (Steph. B. s. v.;Pin. 4.12. s. 26), whence the adjectives Cytaeaeus and Cytaeus, used in reference to Medea and Colchis (Propert. 1.24; Val. Flacc.). Scylax, on the other hand, states that Mala, on the same river, was entitled to that honour.
