GRUMUM( Eth. Grumbestinus: Grumo), a town of Apulia, in the Peucetian territory, the name of which is preserved only in that of the modern village of Grumo, about 9 miles S. of Bitonto(Butuntum), and 14 SW. of Bari (Barium), where ancient remains have been found. But there is no doubt that the Grumbestiniof Pliny (Plin. Nat. 3.11. s. 16) are no other than the inhabitants of Grumum, though the ethnic form is singular. Many numismatists assign to Grumum the coins with the legend ΓΠΥ, which other authorities refer to Grumentum in Lucania. (Romanelli, vol. 2. p. 174; Sestini, Class. Gen. p. 15.)
