HAMAXOECI(Ἁμάξοικοι, Eustath. ad Hom. Il. 13.5; Hesiod. ap. Strab. 7. p. 302; Hdt. 4.46; Aesch. Prom. 709; Strab. 2. p. 87, 7. p.209, 11. p.492). This name was applied by the ancients to the Nomadic hordes who roamed over the N. E. of Europe, neither sowing nor planting,—but living on food derived from animals, especially mares' milk, and cheese,—and moved from place to place, carrying their families in waggons covered with wicker and leather, in the same manner as the Tartars of the present day.
