Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography

MARDYE´NE(Μαρδυηνή, Ptol. 6.4.3), a district of ancient Persis, which, according to Ptolemy, extended to the sea-coast. The name is probably derived from some of the far extended nomade tribes of the Mardi or Amardi. (Hdt. 1.125; Strab. 11. p. 524.)
