Onobrisates

Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography

ONOBRISATES a people of Aquitania, as the name stands in the common texts of Pliny (Plin. Nat. 4.19); who has Onobrisates, Belendi, Saltus Pyrenaeus.D'Anville ( Notice, &c. ) ingeniously supposes that Onobrisates ought to be Onobusates, which is the least possible correction; and he thinks that he discovers the old name in the modern Nébousan, the name of a canton on the left side of the Nestetowards the lower part of its course. The Nesteis one of the branches of the Garonne, and rises in the Pyrenees.
