PODO´CA(Ποδώκηor Πουδώκη, Ptol 7.1.14; Ποδούκη, Peripl. Mar. Erythr. 100.60), a place near the coast of Malabar, not far from the Cáveryriver. According to Bohlen ( Ind. vol. 1. p. 26), the name is a corruption of Podukeri(the new town), (Comp. also Ritter, vol. 5. p. 516.) It is not unlikely that the name has been preserved in the present Pondickerry(written in the Tamil language Puduchchery). Ptolemy mentions another place of the same name in the northern part of the island of Taprobane (7.4.10).
