THELUTHA a fortress situated on an island in the Euphrates. It is mentioned by Ammianus (24.2), who states that it was used as a treasury by the Persians. It is unquestionably the same as the Thilabus of Isidorus ( Stathm. Parth. 1), who gives a similar description of it, and places it at no great distance from another island in the same river, Anatho. Zosimus, speaking of the same region, notices a fortified island, which he calls φρούριον ὀχυρώτατον (3.15); probably the same place. It is doubtless represented now by an island which Colonel Chesney calls Telbes, Tilbus, or Anatelbes(1. p. 53 and Map.).
