Tricasses

Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography

TRICASSES a people of Gallia Lugdunensis. (Plin. Nat. 4.18.) In Ptolemy (Ptol. 2.8.13) the name is Tricasii (Τρικάσιοι), and their city is Augustobona (Αὐγουστόβονα). They border on the Parisii. The name appears in the form Tricassini in Ammianus (16.1) and in an inscription. In the Notit. Province. the name Civitas Tricassium occurs; and the name of the people has been transferred to the town, which is now Troyeson the Seine, the chief town of the French department of Aube. Caesar does not mention the Tricasses, and his silence has led to the conjecture that in his time they were comprised within the powerful state of the Senones.
