Black Raven Alley

A Dictionary of London by Henry A Harben.

1) West out of Coleman Street, near London Wall. In Coleman Street Ward (Hatton, 1708-Strype, 1755).

Not named in the maps.

2) South out of Upper Thames Street at No.104 (P.O. Directory). Near Fishmongers' Hall. In Bridge Ward Within.

First mention: 1574. Messuage in the alley devised to the Fishmongers for the use of the parish of St. Michael, Crooked Lane (End. Ch. 1903, p.11).

Its former name seems to have been "Puppes aley," 26 H. VI. (Hist. MSS. Com. 9th Rep. p. 16). "Popys alley," 33 H. VIII. (ib.).

At the latter reference mention is made of the Black Raven situate on the south side of Thames Street at the corner of "Popys alley" and bounded on the west by the common alleye.

Name derived from this tenement called the Black Raven.
