First mention: "Cockes lane," c. 1241-50 (Anc. Deeds, A. 1661).

Other forms : "Cockis lane," 1287 (MS. D. and C. St. Paul's Press, A. Box 23, 404). "Cokkes lane," 1311 (Ct. H.W. I. 224).

Prior to the formation of Holborn Viaduct the lane extended rather further west to Holborn Conduit.
