Post Office, Lombard Street

A Dictionary of London by Henry A Harben.

On the south side of Lombard Street at No. l0 east of St. Mary Woolnoth (P.O. Directory). In Langbourn Ward.

First mentioned by Strype. He says it was built by Sir Robert Vyner Goldsmith, Alderman for his house, on the ground where a large Tavern stood before the Fire, a large and curious building with good rooms, with a back gate into Sherborn Lane, very convenient for the management of the Post Office business (Strype, ed. 1720, I. ii. 163).

In O. and M. 1677 it is shown as Sir Robert Vyner's house.

Sir Robert Vyner was Alderman of Langbourn Ward 1669-86 and Mayor 1674-5 (Beavan, II. 98).

It is mentioned as the General Post Office in 1688 (H. MSS. Com. 7th Rep. 416).
