profanity

Dictionary of American Words And Phrases by John Russell Bartlett.

This word is in common use here, more particularly with our clergy. It is not in the dictionaries, and I do not recollect ever meeting with it in English authors. The Scottish writers employ it; but English writers use the word profaneness.--Pickering. It appears, however, that English authors are beginning to use it; see Worcester on the word.
