Alba Helvorum

Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography

ALBA HELVORUM or HELVIORUM(Plin. Nat. 3.4. s. 5. 14.3. s. 4.), a city of the Helvii, a tribe mentioned by Caesar ( B. G. 7.7, 8) as separated from the Arverni by the Mons Cevenna. The modern Alpsor Aps, which is probably on the site of this Alba, contains Roman remains. An Alba Augusta, mentioned by Ptolemy, is supposed by D'Anville ( Notice de la Gaule Ancienne) and others to be the same as Alba Helviorum; but some suppose Alba Augusta to be represented by Aups.
