Chinnereth

Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography

CHINNERETH(Κενερέθ, LXX.), a fenced city of the tribe of Naphthali ( Josh. 19.35.) It was apparently situated near the Sea of Tiberias, which in the earlier books is called the Sea of Chinnereth ( Numb. 34.11; Deut. 3.17; Josh. 12.3), and the plains south of Chinneroth( Josh. 11.2) is the great valley of the Jordan—the μέγα πεκίονof Josephus. It was supposed by S. Jerome and others to be the ancient representative of the city Tiberias, and certainly Reland's argument is not valid against this theory. ( Palaest. pp. 161, 724.)
