CROCODILO´POLIS(Κροκοδείλων πόλις, Ptol. 4.5.65: Eth. Κροκοδειλοπολίτης), the name of several cities in Egypt, derived from the local worship of the crocodile.
1. Arsinoe in the Heptanomis, and the Arsinoite nome of the Ptolemaic era, were, under the Pharaohs, called respectively Crocodilopolis and the Crocodilopolite nome. (Steph. B. s. v.) 2. A town in the Aphroditopolite nome of the Thebaid, on the western bank of the Nile, lat. 25° 6′ N., of which ruins are still visible at Embeshanda, on the verge of the Libyan desert. [W.B.D]
