ELAPHITES INS a group of small islands off the coast of Illyricum (Plin. Nat. 3.26) which bore this name from their supposed resemblance to a stag, of which Giupanformed the head, the small Rudathe neck, Mezzothe body, and Calamottathe haunches, the tail being completed by the rock of Grebinior PettiniThey are well cultivated, and, producing abundance of excellent wine and oil, are considered the most valuable part of the Ragusan territory, to which they were annexed A.D. 1080 by Sylvester, king of Dalmatia, (Wilkinson, Dalmatia and Montenegro, vol. 1. p. 267.)
