Hales

Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography

HALES or HALE´SUS(Ἅλυς, gen. Ἅλεντος), a small, river of Ionia in Asia Minor, descending from Mount Cercaphus, and emptying itself, after a short course, into the Aegean near Colophon. (Plin. Nat. 5.31; Liv. 37.36.) Its water is said to have been colder than that of any river in Asia Minor. (Paus. 7.5.5, 8.28.2; Tzetz. ad Lycoph. 424.) Some suppose that this. river is spoken of in a fragment of Mimnermus, quoted by Strabo (14. p. 634), where, however, the common reading is Ἀστήεντος (see Cramer's note). Arundell ( Visit to the Seven Churches, p. 306) believes this river to be the same as the Havagichay, while others identify it with the Tartalu.
