Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography

NOVE´SIUM a fortified place on the Gallic side of the Rhine, which is often mentioned by Tacitus (Tac. Hist. 4.26, 33, 35, &c., 5.22). It is also mentioned in the Antonine Itin. and in the Table. There is no difficulty about the position of Novesium, which is Neuss, between Colonia Agrippina ( Cöln) and Gelduba ( Gelbor Gellep).
