TAGASTE or TAGESTENSE OPP. (Plin. Nat. 5.4. s. 4), a town of Numidia, whose spot is now marked by the ruins at Tajilton the Oued Hamiseor Sugerast, a tributary of the river Mejerda. ( Itin. Ant. p. 44.) Tagaste is particularly distinguished by having been the birthplace of St. Augustine. (Aug. Conf. 2.3.)
