VINDILIS INSULA on the Atlantic coast of Gallia, is mentioned in the Maritime Itin. after Uxantis and Sina or Sena. Middle age documents prove that the island of Belle-îlewas once named Guedel, and this is the name Vindilis, the interchange of Gu or G and W or V being common. [VAPINCUM] Though this is the only evidence, it is sufficient, for the names agree, and Belle-îleis not likely to have been omitted in the Itin., when smaller islands along the coast are mentioned.
