the Aeneid , Virgil's celebrated epic , the hero of which is Aeneas , the progenitor of the Romans : Aeneïdos auctor, Ov. Tr. 2, 533: nec tu divinam Aeneïda tenta, Stat. Th. 12 fin. : morbo oppressus (Vergilius) petivit a suis, ut Aeneïda quam nondum satis elimavisset, adolerent, Gell. 17, 10.
