a kind of small sea-fish , eaten salted by the poor, Plin. 32, 11, 53, § 149; Ov. Hal. 120; Mart. 11, 31, 14; 12, 32, 15; Pers. 3, 76: acipenserem maenae non anteponere, Cic. Fin. 2, 28, 91.—As a term of reproach: deglupta maena, Plaut. Poen. 5, 5, 33.
