CAMPI VE´TERES a place in Lucania, which, according to Livy (Liv. 25.16), was the real scene of the death of Tib. Sempronius Gracchus during the Second Punic War (B.C. 212), though other annalists transferred it to the banks of the Calor, near Beneventum. He gives us no further clue to its situation than the vague expression in Lucanis;and it is impossible to fix it with any certainty. The resemblance of name alone has led local topographers to assign it to a place called Vietri, in the mountains between Potenzaand the valley of the Tanagro. (Romanelli, vol. 1. p. 438.)
