Callisthĕnes, is, m., = Καλλισθένης,

a philosopher of Olynthus , sister’s son and pupil of Aristotle , and a youthful friend of Alexander the Great; finally put to death by him for his freedom of speech , Curt. 8, 5, 13 sqq.; 8, 6, 25; 8, 8, 21; Cic. Rab. Post. 9, 23. Theophrastus bewailed his death in the work entitled Καλλισθένης ἢ περὶ πένθους, Cic. Tusc. 3, 10, 21; 5, 9, 25; cf. Sen. Q. N. 6, 23, 1 sqq.; Cic. Q. Fr. 2, 13, 4.
