An assumed thin ethereal fluid, which, from the retardation of Encke's comet, may be supposed to pervade the planetary space perhaps the spiritus subtilissimus of Newton in virtue of which periodical comets seem to have their velocity diminished, and their orbits contracted at every revolution.
