Carthago Vetus

Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography

CARTHA´GO VETUS(Καρχηδὼν παλαιά, Ptol. 2.6.64: prob. Carte la Vieja), an inland city of the Ilercaones, in the neighbourhood of Tarraco, in Hispania Tarraconensis. From its name we may safely conjecture that it was an old Punic settlement, and that the epithet oldwas added, after the building of New Carthage, to distinguish it from that far more famous city. (Marca, Hisp. 2.8; Ukert, vol. ii. pt. 2. p.419.)
